Our Lady Peace - In Repair
like a machine they’ll fix you
From the start
Kurzweil hypothesizes that, as we approach the technological singularity, the human body will become infinitely reparable and replaceable via nanobots and cybernetic spare parts.
Take this time to figure it out
Know the wires, the fuse, the things that you doubt
The wheels, the air, the metal, the mouth
Something, something, something
Eventually, we will fuse with technology itself as computing power surpasses that of the human brain, but in the in-between stage, the world will become an incredibly interesting place, one populated by both men-on-their-way-to-being-machines and superintelligent computers, so-called “spiritual machines” on their way to being men. A world full of ethical challenges. What does it mean to be “alive,” or “conscious,” or “human”?
And it’s good to know that you’ll drive away
From this car crash nightmare
And I’ll be there to help you again
There’s no danger we’re just
Killing time again
Until they order up new parts…
Parts replaced as they break down or become obsolete, constant upgrades, portable consciousness. Physical bodies abandoned like old hard drives; memory, mind, even the soul ported to newer better encasements. Which piece, the physical or the mental, is really “us”? A world without danger, without loss,
without death.
I’m in repair
The life that we share
I know that I’ll be lost but we’re always in repair
