Magic Hour
jrichmanesq:
agrammar:
Lately, the grandest, goopiest, most deliciously unembarrassable impulses of seventies and eighties pop have been in resurgence. Disco glitter, big-haired bluster, Broadway theatrics—these things have become pop symbols of bravery and brashness, open-hearted vitality and emotional fearlessness. (How could they not, coming after years of kids’ using the word gay as an...

How do you think your fans that have followed you since your Hüsker Dü days...
– Grant Hart has a lot to say about a lot of things, particularly his former bandmates in Husker Du. (via sotc-nyc)
Grant sums up a lot of what I have to say about reunion-mania. Not that I’m not being kind of hypocritical about it; I’ll be seeing Refused, and I’ll see ATDI whenever they get around...

A few thoughts on this:
1) If I were Jordan, I would be pissed right now. There are times when it’s a good thing to take a little ego hit when it ultimately might be...

Introducing: The Livejournal Archive →
In October of 2002, I packed up as much as I could fit in my 1997 Nissan Maxima and set out from Boston to San Diego with a little bit of savings and a whole lot of gumption. No, truthfully I didn’t really have any idea what I was getting myself into, I was more clueless than brave, but hey, I had been feeling stuck in a rut and it seemed like it would be an adventure. And I was right!
While I...

Introducing: The Justice Review Archive →
Between the Fall of 1998 and the Spring of 2001, I wrote 85 articles for the JustArts section of the Brandeis University Justice, our student newspaper, almost all either album reviews or reviews of live performances. The Justice’s online archives do not go back that far, but I still have copies on my hard drive of each article, pre-editing, and I thought it would be fun to get them online.

MY (WHOLLY IDIOSYNCRATIC) TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2011
Starting today, I’ll be counting down my Top Albums of the last year, one a day til we hit #1.
This may read a little bit differently in than in past years. For the first time in a good decade, I spent the whole year doing a lot of writing about music, and in a lot of cases, I’ve already written pretty extensively on these albums elsewhere. Albums that I haven’t covered here or...

My Yearly Top 10 - A Sneak Preview →
As with last year, myself and the rest of the staff over at Property Of Zack have put together a number of year-end lists.
I’ll still be doing my usual in depth write-ups here just after the new year begins, so if you’re interested in the stories behind WHY these albums made my list, stay tuned. I also reserve the right to change things around a bit on my final list; my PoZ list was submitted a...

Simple Math II - The Raw Data
So how did I spend my limited listening time this year? As of December 27, 2011:
By my count, over the course of this year I listened to exactly 250 LPs / EPs / splits / compilations released in 2011.
There were 3,306 songs added to my iTunes library this year got at least one play (this includes older music added this year).
In total, songs added to my iTunes library in 2011 received...

The PropertyOfZack Christmas Extravaganza →
For the second year in a row, we’re celebrating the day over at PoZ with a marathon of reviews of holiday releases, all short and sweet and with a playful spirit in mind. I’ve got ten or so of my own that will be running throughout the day, and there will be some from other staffers as well.
I’ll be doing my best to tweet and facebook links to mine as they go up; I’ll...

PropertyOfZack Review : : Cobra Starship
propertyofzack:
Cobra Starship mastermind Gabe Saporta has progressively toed closer to the pop waters over the course of his band’s first three albums. Cobra’s debut was seen by most as a sharp left turn from Saporta’s previous work with Drive-Thru punks Midtown, but while the brushes may have changed, the palate—big guitars with big hooks, frenetic energy and a heaping helping of sass—wasn’t...
